It’s virtually impossible to capture every angle of a business from a logo alone. However, it’s important to try to tie in as much as possible while making your logo accessible and immediately enticing. Your logo should be simple and to-the-point. Here are 3 key factors that shoukd be considered when designing a logo.
1. Text – When starting your company everything is new. Your name, products and services. That means you need to get your business name out there. In the beginning stages of your business it may be “smart business” to incorporate your name into your logo. But wait it’s more than that. Your logo needs to represent the look and feel of your brand. Having a skilled graphic designer is important for this. They know how to use different fonts to convey different meanings and emotions to your audience.
2. Color – Colors are a key factor in a logo. Certain colors can convey certain emotions. So it’s important to choose wisely. Remember we stated that simple and to-the-point is key so it is important to keep your color selection to three colors or fewer. This will also aide in keeping your printing cost down when printing stationery, apparel and signage. You may even be able to get away with using one color. After doing some research on colors for a client here are some descriptive words that I came across that are associated with specific colors.
a. Red: bold, loud, sexy, edgy
b. Orange: creative, cheery, fun, youthful
c. Yellow: cheery, sunny, optimism
d. Green: growth, organic, instructional, environmental, health
e. Purple: wise, blissful, spiritual
f. Pink: flirty, youthful
g. Blue: professional, calming, trustworthy, dependable
h. Black: powerful, strong, masculine
i. White: pure, innocent, clean, simple, crisp
j. Brown: rural, historic
k. Grey: neutral, calm
3. Image/Graphic – In the last post we discussed how having an “image” to represent your business is important. This “image” can also be referred to as a graphic. This graphic will be used on stationery, clothing, in ads and on your website to name a few. Graphics that are created professionally from a graphic designer and not by using clip art are what you will need for your business. These graphics will allow your business to use them at different sizes and keep your businesses logo looking clean and professional. When considering the graphics/images used in your logo need to consider the longevity of the graphics/images. Your company will hopefully be using this logo for years so changing your logo or rebranding later will be an added expense and could even cause confusion with your customers.
I know all of this can seem overwhelming and confusing but the bottom line is you want to get your business noticed. You want your customers to understand who you are and what you do at a glance.
